Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is used to screen for weight categories that could potentially lead to health problems. Remember this is only a guide, and factors such as muscle and bone mass, age and ethnicity can affect BMI...
Underweight = <18.5You can use our calculator above or work out your BMI yourself. The formula is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (m2). Being overweight and physically inactive, or underweight can affect your health. BMI Categories refer to people over the age of 20 years:
Normal weight = 18.5 - 24.5
Overweight = 25 - 29.9
Obesity = 30 or greater
BMI may overestimate body fat in body builders or athletes and underestimate body fat in the elderly or people with anorexia or muscle wasting. New BMI charts for children over the age of 2 years have been developed by the US Centre for Disease Control. The child and teen calculators can be found at http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/dnpabmi/calculator.aspx?CalculatorType=Metric
Waist Circumference has been found to be a better predictor of health risk than BMI.

Body fat distribution and health risk
Measure your waist circumference by placing a measuring tape around your waist at the level of your umbilicus (belly button). It gives you an indication of your abdominal fat which is one method of predicting, along with BMI, your risk for developing obesity-related diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, certain cancers and Type 2 diabetes.
For men:
94cm or more - increased risk
102cm or more - substantially increased risk
For women:
80cm or more - increased risk
88cm or more - substantially
